This project focuses on the climate crisis, the most imminent emergency facing the human species. Though it is widely acknowledged that our consumerist culture and the resulting mindset fuel the rate at which this crisis is reaching a point of no return, global politics has not addressed this issue substantively. My thesis provides understandings of consumerist politics and of the resulting consumerist mindset derived from analysing four central texts: Naked Lunch (Burroughs, 1959), A Theology of Money(Goodchild, 2009), The Dragon and The Unicorn (Rexroth, 1952), and Vibrant Matter: A Political Ecology of Things (Bennett, 2010). By analysing the works on global economics and its effect on society (Burroughs; Goodchild) and our individual interaction the world and its parts (Bennett; Rexroth) I will reveal a two-part structure within the consumerist framework.I will first investigate consumerist politics as a product of European colonial domination, which permits only those activities that fall within the consumerist/colonial as useful. From these investigations I develop my claim that consumerist politics is organised around two points: (i) A global economic system that replaces the needs of basic survival with the aims of capital, the satisfaction of which becomes addictive, and (ii) the perception of all non-human matter as fundamentally replaceable (which renders the planet as falling within humanity's consumptive purview). I will then investigate the indifference of global political powers to the climate crisis as being a result of what I am calling the rhetoric of impatience. Organised in the same structure, since it is inseparable from consumerist politics, the rhetoric of impatience demands: (i) that our artificially immediate needs be satisfied, sacrificing long-term survival for addictive practices, and (ii) that this addiction prevents individuals accepting changes that threaten their next fix.
