'A palace within a Palace': the Speaker's House at Westminster, 1794-1834

My project will investigate the original Speaker's House within the Palace of Westminster. The Speaker took over the former Auditor's House in 1794, and in subsequent years it was lavishly remodelled by James Wyatt. My project will provide the first detailed study of this long-lost building which has been overlooked by historians. I will reconstruct its changing layout and appearance; analyse its importance in relation to the Speaker's evolving role; and consider its stylistic significance within Wyatt's oeuvre and the Georgian Gothic revival. Finally, I will consider the influence of the first Speaker's House on its Victorian successor.
