Applied Games for Treating Phobias in Children

Research has previously explored digital interventions for the treatment of phobias, including computerised therapy programmes and virtual reality; however, there are gaps in the literature as to how game design mechanics and therapy manuals can be combined in a design process for a streamlined development and delivery of therapy interventions. The research question I propose is how game design mechanics can be implemented in practice to deliver a clinical intervention for the treatment of phobias of children. To achieve this, I propose a user centred design programme of work, utilizing mechanics of co-design and mixed data collection methods. Bridging the gap between games design and clinical interventions will be a contribution not only to the wider research community of games developers and researchers, but also potentially to the health and education sector. The end product will be a games prototype that can be evaluated with a clinical population and a reflective account of the co-design process that can be replicated by other game designers for different clinical interventions with different populations.
