The project will:Explore existing intermittent sites around the world, both those content with intermittency and those attempting to transform to continuous supply, to identify key factors driving the divergent approaches. Site investigations will include data collection and interviews with stakeholders in these systems, facilitated by WaterAid and existing contacts/collaborations from the University of Sheffield. To explore the potential interventions, either of transforming to continuous supply or sustainable intermittency, a hydraulic model of the current Lahan water system will be developed. This model will include understanding of the physical assets and also the behaviour of the operators and customers of the system. The development of the model will be facilitated by the Beacon Project and the Nepal Water Supply Corporation (NWSC) and the existing data they have about the system. The student will work with existing PhD students at the University of Sheffield who are developing modelling techniques for intermittent water systems. This phase of the project will be supported by a research visit to Nepal to collect any additional information required about the Lahan system. To explore the transferability of the interventions across Nepal, information will also be collected about other water systems in Nepal. This phase of the project will involve a second field visit to Nepal.
