The focus of the project is to develop and understand the fundamentals of electrode-electrolyte interfaces in battery cells based on the sodium metal chloride technology developed by LiNa energy, as an alternative to Li Ion batteries. The interfaces of the cells will be investigated through in-situ and in-operando techniques, such as secondary ion mass spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron microscopy, in order to not only understand their features but to obtain detailed information on the outermost atomic surface and the chemical variation in the immediate subsurface region (1-10 nm). Through this a comprehensive understanding of the battery and its electrochemical performance, with respect to the chemical evolution of the interfaces, can be ascertained.
