Urbanised Subjectivities in Catalan Narrative, 1882-1974

This project will use the General Theory of Urbanisation (1867) by Ildefons Cerdà to study the construction of urbanised subjectivities in late C19th and C20th Catalan novels. Cerdà (1815-76), a Catalan engineer and urban planner, envisages a grid network of streets covering the entire surface of the Earth that he predicts will create universal peace. I question the spatial and moral dimensions of the Theory in relation to nomadic theory, and by analysing literature in light of an urbanistic text, the thesis will contribute to our understanding of how urban design processes construct new conceptions of the urban subject.
