The Thames on the eve of Londinium: exploring a Late Iron Age landscape

This project will be the first to comprehensively map the development of pre-Roman London by exploring the evidence of late Iron Age settlements. London's Iron Age record is currently hidden amongst hundreds of excavation reports and isolated discoveries. Current literature on the Iron Age landscape suggests a sparse, barely inhabited backwater. My interdisciplinary approach utilising archaeology and digital humanities will challenge this by generating a comprehensive survey, drawing together grey literature and vast unpublished materials from London's archaeological archives and museum collections. The project will thus allow a greater understanding of the character of the Thames on the eve of invasion, offering a new account of the pre-Roman landscape and context to the rise and origin of London. This is possible due to my professional experience in field archaeology and archives which have allowed me to develop relationships with all the relevant London heritage institutions.
