Women Musicians and Lute Pedagogy in Early Modern England: A Historical and Practice-Based Investigation

My research will investigate how female lute students influenced the development of lute music and itstechnique during Elizabethan and early Jacobean England. This will involve analysing manuscripts createdand owned by women, particularly tracing variations in pieces that survive in multiple sources. This willshow the influence of these sources and restore the agency of women's musical activities in historicaldiscourses. Additionally, I will engage with practice-based research by performing this music using variouslute sizes, techniques, and performance information derived from this research, all of which will be audiovisuallydocumented and shared in preparation for my final recital.
