Transitions and labour market outcomes for ethnic minority young people in Scotland: Applicant Statement

This project will investigate BME young people's transitions and trajectories through education and into the labour market. In particular, it will seek to ascertain what factors influence their choices of both school subjects and Higher Education applications, and what effects these have on employment prospects. In addition, data on university admissions will be analysed to investigate application outcomes and Higher Education trajectories. Sources of quantitative data will include datasets from the Scottish Longitudinal Survey (2018), the Scottish Government, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), and Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). Relationships to be investigated will include those between ethnicity and social class, and how these interact with subject choice, educational attainment and employment outcomes. Statistical methods will involve multivariate linear regression and binary logistic regression, with the latter being utilised to analyse university admission data. Path analysis will also be employed to investigate education and employment trajectories, with subject choice in particular as an important mediating variable. As the2data originate from different sources, initial stages of the project might involve converting the data into a uniform format, creating a common database if appropriate, and removing any anomalies
