Against Cultural Amnesia - Art, Memory and Resistance in 21st Century gentrified Manhattan

Once a site of queer and artistic avant-garde creativity, Lower Manhattan is now a highly gentrifieddestination neighbourhood. This thesis will explore the gentrification that has occurred in this area sincethe 2008 financial crash, drawing on the life of the con-artist Anna Delvey, the work of performanceartist Penny Arcade and the development of the High Line. Using a mixed-methods approach, I willinvestigate art and scholarship exploring New York's gentrification, interrogating how and whygentrification is a practice of erasure and forced forgetfulness and whether creative approaches aresuccessful in resisting this 'cultural amnesia'.
