Through a Glass Lens: Technological Innovation and Societal Change in Early Islamic North Africa

The Muslim conquests of North Africa and the Mediterranean (7th-8th c. CE) resulted in an unprecedented movement of people, goods, and ideas. This project explores the interplay between North African glass industries and societal change in the Islamic world from the 7th-11th centuries to understand how changes in glass manufacture, production, and trade reflect broader political and economic issues in the region post-conquest. The study of newly excavated glass assemblages from Tunisia and Morocco will show how these changes impacted technological transmission and economic exchange in two culturally and politically contrasting regions within the Islamic world.
