英文摘要
My dissertation - 'The Emotional Revolution: Institutions, Pedagogies and Intimacies in 21st Century Barcelona' - examines the relationship between popular music education and national, gender, class and ethnic identities in 21st century Catalonia. Through ethnographic and archival work at one of the most prestigious music schools around - the ESMUC (Catalonia College of Music) in Barcelona - my doctoral research interrogates how the ESMUC's academic programmes have shaped the local and national music scenes during the last two decades. I explore the challenges to incorporate jazz, flamenco, folk, pop and EDM into degree programmes in a conservatory-like institution, and the institutional efforts to encourage collaboration between departments and music genres, educators and students, and institution and local communities. A young generation of ESMUC-educated artists like Rosalia, Silvia Perez Cruz or Rodrigo Cuevas has recurrently combined Spanish folk genres, such as flamenco, with contemporary popular musics, inheriting the institutional ethos of musical mixture in their work and public personas. In order to understand the catalyst of their musical eclecticism, I trace their life stories back to the halls, classrooms and local venues where learned their craft. Ultimately, I will show how the discourses of educational reform and musical hybridity are intertwined with the Spanish-Catalan nationalist conflict, and therefore with the impulse of some of these artists to provoke an "emotional revolution": the mobilisation of culturally shared emotions through music, with the aim of "bringing people together".
