Colonial fascism at war in North Africa, 1940-43: a comparative study of the Imperial New Orders of Fascist Italy and Vichy France

I aim to explore the Imperial New Orders of Vichy France and Fascist Italy through a comparative study of the practices of repression and mobilization in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya in the Second World War (1940-1943). The colonized populations behind the frontline were subject to various forms of violence in the context of a total, fascist, colonial war. I will assess this dimension of mobilization and repression and argue that there were significant institutional and ideological similarities between the Italian and French Empires during the war, and transnational channels of dialogue and collaboration.
