Psychosomatics and Power in Corporeal Art: strategies of resistance in the context of British healthcare

My research analyses the work of British artists from the 1980s and 1990s with a view to examining Britain's transition to a neoliberal healthcare system. Advancing an art-historical intervention into the study of 'psychosomatics', I ask how psychosomatic aesthetics in the work of three 'corporeal' artists, working in the early years of Britain's transition to neoliberal governance, can suggest new readings of how neoliberal power works through medical institutions to produce unfreedom and inequalities. Bringing art-historical analysis to bear on trans-disciplinary studies of the psychosomatic, this research seeks new strategies of resistance to the violence of neoliberal healthcare regimes.
