The project aims to explore how tank testing outcomes can be applied to associated design problems,for example, evaluate the impacts of dynamic motion of FOWTs - induced by combined wind, wave,and current loading - on the drivetrains of these devices. The evaluation will include determining andcharacterising the impact as well as potentially advising on mitigation strategies. The project will linkexisting hydrodynamic testing knowledge at FloWave with floating wind technology expertise in the Schoolof Engineering and IDCORE partners. Additional issues relating to the simulation of extreme events andfailure situations will also be explored, such as line loss on a floating offshore wind turbine. In doing so, theproject intends to expand the current capabilities of tank testing and to showcase it's importance to theindustry. The key outcome for FloWave is the ability to feed into client design programmes at an earlierstage, and open up new test markets.
