My thesis will explore the reception of Thucydides by Czeslaw Milosz and Zbigniew Herbert, two of the most important Polish poets of the twentieth century. It will be the first study of the reception of Thucydides in Eastern Europe, and simultaneously the first Anglophone attempt to give Milosz and Herbert's rich reception of antiquity their deserved place at the centre of Classical Reception Studies.
