In 21st century Britain, translation for children is an endangered species. Representing anestimated 3% of books published for children, it survives in part thanks to the energy oftranslators and advocates, and is now being integrated into wider campaigns for diversity ofcreators and content in children's literature. By mapping this understudied field, this projectseeks to look beyond truisms about cultural exchange. It will critically investigate therelationships between precarity, advocacy, diversity and translation for children, asking: whatkind of books do these circumstances produce? Who is being translated, and how?
