Recent advances in the growth of quantum dot structures and in fabricating buried oxidised layers to create high refractive index contrast waveguides have opened up the possibility of creating integrated photonics on a platform compatible with growth on silicon. In this project, we will design, fabricate and test an integrated circuit for use in optical coherence tomography for the detection and visualisation of skin cancer. We will make use of an on-chip swept wavelength laser source coupled to waveguide routing elements and an on-chip detector for use in a swept wavelength interferometer. The funded student will be expected to focus on design, fabrication and characterisations of the individual components and system with support from postdoc researchers and other team members.
