英文摘要
This doctoral research project aims to trace the genesis of Tamil Prose and its development in connection with the (English/western) colonial knowledge systems and its impact in the henceforth writing process in Tamil tradition. The project aims to historicise the pre-history of the literary genre- prose and the beggings of its modern form. The Modern Tamil prose emerged with the publishing activities of missionaries, colonial administration, and the growing reading and writing public sphere. Thus, the project will delineate the process. The thesis will also study the emergence of prose fiction- Novel. Novel in Tamil (as elsewhere in India) is a nineteenth-century phenomenon that influenced (and influenced by) prose writings. It also aims to draw parallels with other writings available of the period and show the various factors involved. More importantly, it will situate the reception of English works and their translations in the vernacular tradition and how it responded. This work will serve whoever is interested in the (post)colonial, cultural, literary, English, and Tamil Studies.
