Uruguayan Football: an Investigation into Identity, Nationality, Modernity and Globalisation

This doctoral project examines the past and present role of football in Uruguay, focussing on the sport's centrality toidentity, nationality, modernity and globalisation. For over a century, football has been an essential component ofUruguayan culture and national sentiment, and study of the sport offers unique insights into these processes. Researchon sport straddles the social sciences, arts and humanities, and so I will employ a mixed methods approach, includingarchival research, historical analysis of texts and images, participant observation and semi-structured interviews toinvestigate three central questions: 1. How was football imbricated in the project of modernity in Uruguay and beyond inthe early 20th century? 2. How is the sport used in the construction of national identity, and how did Uruguay deal withthe societal conflicts over immigration, class, gender and race which arose from this process? 3. What is the currentstatus of football in Uruguay, how does it compare to its previous highs, and how can this enrich our understandings ofpatterns of globalisation and world history?
