Enzyme Responsive Materials (ERM) for personalised drug delivery

This project employs the concept of enzyme responsive drug release to synthesise and design materials with tuneable drug release profiles able to provide long lasting drug release in the peritoneal cavity. The project will prepare a variety of enzyme responsive linkers and incorporate them into hydrogel materials to study and tune the release of anticancer drugs. The performance of these materials will be assessed in vivo to identify materials suitable for long lasting drug delivery. Long lasting drug release to kill residual cancer cells after tumour resection is particularly challenging in the peritoneal cavity after surgical removal of tumour cells in ovarian cancer. This is an unmet clinical need which, if addressed, could lead to improved patient survival rates.
