英文摘要
This research will explore the politics of vocal sounds and noises in 20th century sound art and protest, with a focus on cultural expressions concerned with the trauma of war. The project asks whether these sounds, particularly in the service of an antimilitaristic agenda, can be read as noisy disobedience against silence's obedience. This research will consider whether non-linguistic vocal sounds are interpretable not as a substitute for traditional forms of language, but rather a vital expansion of it in the context of antimilitaristic art and protest. At the centre of the project will be a critical analysis of works of art and acts of sounding where the makers are not seeking coherent articulation but rather taking advantage of the affective qualities of speech by bringing the corporeality of language to the forefront of the listening experience. The primary case studies will be Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, Åke Hodell and the Greenham Common Protesters. The research will specifically focus on art and soundings that highlight the unreliability of language and where traditional forms of articulated expression are replaced by non-linguistic vocalisations of interior intensities.
