Trees Revisited: Exploring the Nature of Identity in Arboreal Poetry

This creative-critical project investigates how the poetic and ecological legacies of nineteenth-centuryarboreal poetry can be brought into dialogue with contemporary poetic practice for the benefit both oflandscapes and of the poetry inspired by them. The critical component explores the contingentrelationship between humanity, poetry and trees, examining poetry by writers of different classes,genders and genres. It considers how this relationship's poetic presentation is influenced by the poet'samateur knowledge of natural history and literary history, by their conservationist interests and livedexperience. Revisiting trees made famous by literary texts, the creative component considers how theirpoetic depictions interact with their current realities. It asks how this writer might engage poetically withthe twenty-first century landscapes of nineteenth-century texts as a working-class woman of colour in anexploration of the nexus of nature, poetic legacy and human identity.
