In the histories of state and identity formation from bureaucratisation to nationhood, singular loyalty to a singular identity is taken as the narrative norm, with dual monarchies representing an under-explored exception. However, by questioning these models of exclusivity and the boundaries of peoples, places, and principles in identity, structures such as the fifteenth-century Anglo-French dual monarchy provide a space in which to think of loyalty and the praxis of 'doing loyalty' as pluralistic. By doing so, this study will provide a fresh outlook on the structures of power, agency, and participation in kingship and commonwealth.
