Quantum dots, known as artificial atoms, are nanometer-sized semiconductor crystals where the states of individual charges behave according to the laws of quantum mechanics. The quantized magnetic states of the quantum dot electrons have been widely studied for the purpose of quantum information storage and processing. Recent advances in quantum science and semiconductor nanotechnology resulted in development of a new type of quantum dots. In these lattice-matched nanostructures quantum control of magnetic states can be achieved not only for charges but also for the atomic nuclei. The aim of this project is to develop quantum control techniques applicable to many-body nuclear spin ensembles as well as the states of individual atoms embedded of the quantum dot crystal lattice. This work will provide in-depth understanding of the nanoscale quantum physics and create a platform for a new generation of solid-state quantum information processing devices with large-scale on-chip integration.
