In this EngD project a key aim will be to (1) develop a low-cost and rapid machinability evaluation technique for titanium alloy components produced by convention forging routes and emerging powderroutes (such as additive manufacturing), which generate a range of different microstructures and textures. Another aim will be to (2) understand the effect of microstructure and texture of subsurface damage and tool life. The long term ambition is to develop digital twins that simulate new tool solutions with new alloy chemistries and textures and reliably predict damage accumulation that could lead to poor mechanical performance in service. The component could be, for example, a hip joint or aerostructural part and we will collaborate with the supply chain of these respective industry sectors to develop these digital twins.
