Life Beyond Net-Zero: An investigation into the deployment of renewable and negative emission technologies

One possible method for carrying out this research would be to initially model netzeroscenarios using UK-TIMES, with a modelling period of 2010 to 2050. For this period,multiple scenarios would be defined, with the common goal of net-zero emissions by 2050,in line with current U.K Carbon Budgets, and with currently available technologicalpossibilities input. For each scenario the model would identify the least-costdecarbonisation route for the energy system, alongside the energy mix, and costsassociated, among other factors. During the second period starting in 2050, different goalscould be set via policy targets, such as full-zero or negative emissions targets, whichalongside a realistic base scenario, would allow for scenarios to be compared and the maindrivers of NETs (within this context) to be investigated. The results of these scenarios wouldshow the energy technology mix, production and consumption, greenhouse gas emissions,investment levels and system costs (among others) at five-year intervals and the end of thetime horizon. Additionally, relationships between REs, NETs, and fossil fuels, and the effectsof varying levels of REs and NETs on the energy system will also be explored.
