Reframing Sonic Landscape: music, nature, and politics in the United States of America

How do we understand music's relationship with and representations of nature and the natural world in the United States of America's complex history of sucah terms? Much of the foundational literature of ecomusicology - a subfield studying a conjoining of musicology with ecology - has focused on a canonised corpus of late-nineteenth and early-twentieth European composers. Whilst these texts have revealed the importance of this intertwining to music's role within the development of nationalised (and nationalistic) cultural movements, their historical location has not presented a setting to engage with ecology in a contemporary context. There is also a pressing need to bring ecomusicological scholarship into conversation with other subfields in the environmental humanities which challenge the idea of a singular perspective of "nature" in the United States of America - how do the histories of redlining Black individuals and communities, or of the extensive theft of land from Native American tribes by European settlers, reframe a cultural concept that has often been construed in the White American imagination as providential and heavily influenced by Christian theology?
