Targeted delivery of CBD and other therapeutics for Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG)

Gershkovich and Marlow have been working on different approaches to target the analgesic cannabidiol to the CNS (1) oral delivery and lipid based formulations and (2) intrathecal delivery and nanoformulations. We have found that we can alter the cannabidiol biodistribution within the CNS. Using these formulations and understanding as the starting point, the grand challenge of this project is to design lipid based and nanoformulations to maximise the concentrations of drugs in the pons for the treatment of Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG)(a paediatric brain tumour) -found in an area of the brainstem known as the pons. The drugs selected will have very different physicochemical properties to those of cannabidiol and hence the project will also bring a higher level of understanding to targeting drugs to different regions within the CNS.
