DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): This proposed Frameworks project "From Local to Global" will bring together the faculty and resources of four separate schools at the University of Washington-Medicine, Public Health, Law, and Arts and Sciences-to address the challenges of improving global health. The goal of this project is to develop new curricular resources and administrative frameworks that will remove barriers to and facilitate multidisciplinary training in global health for the next generation of researchers, providers, and policy makers. Specifically over the three-year project we will: 1) Develop a coordinated, interdisciplinary curriculum that will energize and inspire undergraduates, graduate students, and researchers interested and/or active in global health. 2) Establish a comprehensive overview of the wide range of existing and developing global health activities at the University of Washington, and an administrative structure to coordinate these programs, providing information sharing, cross-fertilization and an integrated database of academic, research, and training opportunities. 3) Build the global health constituency by synergizing the efforts of faculty and researchers currently working in the area, providing outreach to those not currently involved in global health issues, and strengthening ties to our international partners and our Northwest regional partners. 4) Systematically evaluate activities carried out by the grant in short-term and medium-term accomplishments. Advances in global health require multidisciplinary collaboration in medicine, public health, law, and social sciences. The University of Washington (UW) is one of a growing number of universities to begin to address the complexity of issues in global health, and is in the process of forming a Department of Global Health to be functional in 2009. It is also host to a significant number of programs and research in the global health arena, including 6 Fogarty programs, the Population Leadership Program, and numerous research projects. Spread as they are across the university, these research enterprises have not had the opportunity to share resources, best practices, or ideas. The program will serve as a "proof of concept" for working across schools and programs to systematize scientific excellence in teaching and learning and will reinforce and advance international collaborative research efforts and bring new students and researchers into the global health effort.
