Contemporary Feminist Photography against Gender-Based Violence: Scottish Women's Organisations in Context, 1994-Present

This research builds on interdisciplinary literature to further the analysis of feminist representations of gender-based violence (GBV), connecting it to photography and visual activism. Focusing on photographic projects created by women's organisations in Scotland since 1994, my research will analyse how photography can be used to create resistance and challenge rape culture. I will interview photographers, activists, and commissioners, and use a combination of visual methodologies that provide a holistic understanding of photographic projects: discourse analysis, semiology, and social semiotics. This analysis will create common ground to facilitate understanding between feminist organisations, academics, and photographers in the challenge against GBV
