This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Specific aim #1. Recruit and hire an associate director for the Proteomics Core facility. A Ph.D. level scientist with experience in protein mass spectrometry will be recruited and hired to supervise and operate the Proteomics Core Facility. Discussions between the P.I. and the Program Director resulted in a proposal that the Cajal Institute determine the Biology Faculty interest in hiring a senior level faculty member specializing in proteomics to enhance the operation of the Proteomics Core Facility. The Faculty unanimously voted in favor of this proposal. A search committee will be formed over the summer, with recruiting beginning in Fall, 2005. Specific aim #4. Purchase laser capture microdissection equipment. Laser capture microdissection equipment will be obtained for analyzing proteins in selected cells within a tissue. Equipment demonstrations were arranged to do hands-on evaluation of laser capture microdissection microscopes. One-day workshops were presented by Leica Instruments and by Molecular Machines. All faculty and graduate students in the Biology Department were invited. The workshops were attended by about 35 faculty and students. Selection of an instrument to purchase will be completed early in the next grant fiscal year. Specific aim #5. Purchase accessory proteomics equipment. Equipment for two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and protein spot excision will be obtained for high resolution protein separations. Spot cutter equipment was evaluated through discussions with Bio-Rad and GE (Amersham) sales representatives. A Bio-Rad EXQuest Spot Cutter was selected and ordered, along with imaging equipment and image analysis software.
