This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Molecular and cellular biology are integral components and important foci of the research activities of a number of the research faculty and other investigators involved in interdisciplinary research within the School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences. Establishment of an MCBL facility is a necessary and vital addition to the research infrastructure which would serve as a central resource facility in providing state-of-the-art equipment and instrumentation, as well as expert technical support service, including computational biology and bioinformatics approaches for analysis of genes and proteins, and experimental design assistance to an interdisciplinary research staff involved in basic research in the biomedical and bioenvironmental fields. The MCBL facility will not only support the molecular and cellular biology research needs of the participating investigators, but it will also enhance the current research infrastructure at MSU, and facilitate access to a new state-of-the-art research facility. The MCBL will be managed by a Core Laboratory Director and assisted by a Core Laboratory Technician. Furthermore, a Core laboratory AC will oversee proper operation and performance of the laboratory. In addition, the laboratory will receive input and advice from the RCMI Committee at their regularly scheduled meetings. This laboratory will serve as a vehicle for enhancing the research productivity of the faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, research associates, technicians and research personnel in other departmental laboratories. Finally, the MCBL is structured as a shared services facility that will also promote interdisciplinary, as well as intradepartmental and interdepartmental, research. It will also promote external collaborations among investigators, enhance innovative research activity through the use of new research tools and technologies, and accelerate the research productivity and discoveries of the research staff.
