Following recent demonstration of exceptional spin and optical properties for atomic-scale defects in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) - even at room temperature (RT), this material has emerged as a promising platform for solid-state quantum engineering. To establish the spin-photon interface required for most quantum technologies, it is crucial to demonstrate both coherent spin and optical transitionsfor the same quantum emitter. Yet, performance variations between distinct classes of defects, as well as among individual point defects, present a challenge. Early evidence suggests charge dynamics arelargely responsible for the observed instability of spin and optical transitions. In this project, electrostatically gated devices will be designed, fabricated and tested to determine whether charge control and energy tuning can be achieved for a specific class of spin-active hBN quantum emitters. The intrinsic limits of spin coherence for charge-controlled defects will be investigated. The project will also focus on the spin physics of the electron and nuclear spins, which may contribute to elucidation of the defect chemical structure. Along with progress by the group in evaluating optical coherence, this project will help benchmark the performance of the chosen hBN defect as a spin-photon interface.
