This research looks at artists' writings and artists' books produced by women involved in the feminist movement in Italy from the 1970s to the 1990s. Specifically, the project explores how these works respond to the feminist practice of the art critic Carla Lonzi. Contrary to expectation, the feminism of Lonzi was not sympathetic to female artists since Lonzi believed that artistic and feminist practices were incompatible. However, not all the artists in Lonzi's circle shared this view: this research explore the work of female artists who negotiated the complex relationship between feminism and art.
