Liminality in the works of Archbishop Wulfstan of York (d. 1023): sources, strategies, and significance

My project will examine liminality in Archbishop Wulfstan of York's (d. 1023) corpus of Old English and Latin homilies and legal texts, with particular attention to his sources and narrative strategies. Such a comprehensive study of his corpus will permit, for the first time, illumination of his character, his ecclesiastical leadership and his secular influence. I will contextualise my analysis of Wulfstan's works within his Christian-Latin sources and the literature of his Anglo-Saxon and continental contemporaries to better reveal Christian life in Anglo-Saxon York during across the turn of the first millenium and the 1016 Danish Conquest.
