A study into the causes and extent of the left-wing voting behaviour of LGBT+ voters

Previous research has shown there is a tendency for members of the LGBT+ community to vote more forleft-wing parties than their heterosexual counterparts. I will discuss the most prominent explanations forthis phenomena and argue that, while they are convincing in explaining the voting behaviour of LGBT+voters when society was much less tolerant of the LGBT+ community and in which they had fewer rights,more research is required to identify the relevant causes for this left-wing voting behaviour in youngerLGBT+ voters in contempory society. Current research lacks a sufficient explanation for the votingbehaviour continuing despite living in an age of increasing social tolerance, and in which, theexplanations for the left-wing leaning of the LGBT+ community should not apply to such an extent tocreate a gender identity and sexuality gap. My proposal outlines my intention to carry out focussedresearch on both the causes of the gender identity and sexuality gap in British politics, as well asdetermining the extent to which this gap is prevalent.
