CONSORTIUM FOR RADIOLOGIC IMAGING OF POLYCYSTIC KIDNEY DISEASE: INNOVATIVE IMAG

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The goal of the CRISP Full-Scale Study is to conduct a prospective, longitudinal trial to evaluate the accuracy and validity of magnetic resonance imaging to determine disease progression in ADPKD defined as a change in both renal and renal cyst volumes over time. The study intends to consider the MRI based measurements as the gold standard and at present intends to compare the relative accuracy of ultrasound to MRI in determining the extent of cystic involvement cross-sectionally and over time. 1) To determine if MRI including gadolinium enhancement detects small changes in renal volume, cystic volume and non-cystic renal parenchymal volume over a short period of time in ADPKD individuals. 2) To determine if ultrasound measurement of cross-sectional cyst area based on representative cross-sectional images are similar to percent cyst volume based on total renal volume and cyst volume measurements obtained by magnetic resonance imaging. 3) To determine if change in renal volume, cystic volume, and non-cystic renal parenchymal volume will correlate with change in renal function in ADPKD individuals. 4) To determine which factors predict disease progression defined as an increase in total renal volume, cyst volume, and percent cyst volume over time. 5) To determine if changes in renal volume, cystic volume, and non-cystic volume and decline in glomerular filtration rate will be greater in ADPKD individuals categorized as higher risk in comparison to ADPKD individuals categorized as lower risk for progression to renal failure. 6) To determine if correlation between changes in renal volume, cystic volume, non-cystic renal parenchymal volume exists with the occurrence of signs, symptoms and complication of ADPKD including but not limited to, the development of hypertension, frequency and severity of pain, frequency and duration of hematuria and general quality of life.
