We face a climate change crisis and require the rapid development and deployment of greenhouse gas mitigation technologies. Electrochemical carbon dioxide capture is an emerging technology that has the potential to overcome some of the limitations of carbon capture by traditional amine scrubbing. In this project, we aim to tackle a key disadvantage of common electrochemical carbon capture methods, viz. unwanted side reactions with oxygen. This project will explore the synthesis and characterisation of new molecules for stable electrochemical carbon dioxide capture. We will investigate the thermodynamics of adsorption and will carry out spectroscopy to understand the speciation of redox active molecules during the carbon dioxide capture process.
