The Musical Source Culture in 1780s Vienna: A Study of Distribution and Chronology

Through the consultation of previously neglected archival material, contemporary advertisements, and a wide range of manuscripts pertaining to lesser-known composers and professional copyists, this project presents significant new information on the commercial distribution and chronology of musical sources in Vienna during the 1780s. Using a newly developed approach to manuscript analyses, subsequently applied on an unparalleled large scale, the origins of a variety of documents, hitherto unknown, are uncovered and their biographical implications and significance relative to their creators and distributors are discussed.
