Metal-Free Catalyst Development Using Microwaves

Over the last two decades there has been a growing drive towards the development of catalytic processes that do not rely on precious metals. Frustrated Lewis Pairs (FLPs) are non-toxic, abundant metal-free catalytic systems where an unquenched Lewis acid (LA) and a Lewis base (LB) work cooperatively to activate small molecules (H2 and CO2) for catalytic reactions. However, exactly what makes a good FLP catalyst is difficult to predict. This proposal looks to make a step-change in the understanding of FLP catalysis by employing microwave dielectric spectroscopy to characterise these systems and their reactions. Such an approach provides a unique and creative solution to a fundamental problem in the area of FLP catalysis and calls on an interdisciplinary team which will enable the field to develop.
