Quantum computing is a rapidly evolving area of research. There are now numerous physical systems, such as photons, spins and atoms, that are implemented into devices that perform various tasks, like quantum information processing, transmission and storage. However, there is not one physical system that can be used for every task. A hybrid quantum system approach is suggested as a solution to this problem, in which various physical systems work complementarily. There must be interfaces between each system to realise hybrid quantum systems: one possible interface is the quantum transducer. There are existing devices which can be used as quantum transducers, but their transduction efficiency is below practical levels. I will be working under the supervision of Dr Krishna Coimbatore Balram to realise a new device that will be tailored for quantum transduction, specifically working in the microwave-optical domain.
