This studentship will be investigating manufacturing methods of solid state electrolytes, focusing on using Near Infra red heating as a method of sintering the electrolytes in situ onto the electrodes. The research will examine different deposition methods, effect of substrate on crystal formation and the effect of wavelength and intensity on the sintering of particles. The research will also investigate the opportunity to create liquid grain boundaries during the manufacturing process in order to reduce processing temperature and increase the range of substrates that the electrolytes can be deposited on. NASICON will be used as a case study but this will be expanded to other electrolyte compositions towards the end of the studentship.
