Liquid crystal solitons as vehicles for nano-cargo transport

Active matter is often related to swimmers and bacteria, powered by ATP. We will investigate a non-living form of active matter, liquid crystalline solitons and specifically "directrons" and "torons", which are powered by applied electric fields. After studying the mechanism of soliton creation and dynamics of their motion, these will be exploited as vehicles for nano-cargo transport. The ultimate aim of this work is to develop a system of directrons or torons which can pick up nano-particles of various size and nature and transport them to desired spatial points by the use of directing the solitons via topological defect arrays.
