英文摘要
The aim of this research is to develop a systematic understandingof the attitudes, beliefs, and experiences of parents and childrenfrom non-Welsh speaking households towards Welsh and Welshmediumeducation (WME) to better inform Welsh AssemblyGovernment (WAG) policy. Previous research has recognised theimportance of parents' motivations in informing WAG's Welshlanguage policy and the autonomy of children in these decisions asthey get older. However, an increasing number of young Welshspeakersdo not come from Welsh speaking households and thereis a dearth of literature focusing uniquely on their parents' andtheir own attitudes and beliefs about the Welsh language, andtheir experiences of WME. Therefore, an updated account ofyoung Welsh speakers' and parents' beliefs about the Welshlanguage and experiences of WME could provide an importantbasis for WAG's future language policies, that are morecomprehensive and inclusive of 'new speaker' (O'Rourke et al.,2015 p. 1) perspectives. A sample of approximately 450 parentsand children from the anglicised area of Southeast Wales willprovide a comprehensive overview of non-Welsh speaking parentsand new speakers' attitudes, beliefs, and experiences. Data will becollected via questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, andparticipatory research. Quantitative data will be analysed usingdescriptive and inferential techniques and qualitative data will beanalysed using thematic analysis. This will provide a deeperunderstanding of non-Welsh speaking parents and new speakers'unique motivations, challenges and experiences regarding WME,which could be used to tailor policy to their needs and strengthenWAG's current language revitalisation policies.
