Stultification, emancipation, Brexit and Jacques Ranciere

Contemporary philosophers have argued that explanation, or some forms of explanation, leadto stultification, namely the assumption that people are incapable of independent thought andinitiative which inhibits self-emancipatory efforts. Going beyond critics such as Chambers andProposal Summary: Cornelissen, this dissertation investigates the nature and cause of stultification and its relation to emancipation in the context of Northern English working classes voting for Brexit, an eventI which led many commentators to regard such voters as ignorant, to the dismay of others. In I order to develop a deeper understanding of stultification, this dissertation puts Ranciere's work into dialogue with qualitative social research.
