英文摘要
The aim of this PhD is (i) to explore the use of the Pentateuch in the gospel of Mark and (ii) to situate this exploration in current debate surrounding the gospels within Judaism. There is a growing scholarly interest in understanding the gospels as embedded within Second Temple Judaism. Moving away from earlier 'parting of the ways' dichotomies, the gospels are increasingly being read 'not merely against the "background" of 1st century Judaism but as actually a part of its fluid and flexible fabric' (Cirafesi, 2021). Fresh readings of Matthew, Luke, and John have emerged in recent years within this larger discussion. The Jewishness of Mark, however, has been largely overlooked in this debate. Although isolated sections of the second gospel appear in generic work on the gospels within Judaism, no systematic study of the gospel's text has been undertaken. The proposed research is therefore not only intrinsic importance in understanding how the Pentateuch functions in the gospel of Mark, but also of wider relevance in redressing the meagre treatment of Mark in the ongoing discussion surrounding the gospels within Judaism.
