Performative exercise practices and non-binary gender expressions

The impact of performative exercise practices such as weightlifting and boxing for non-binary people is currently under researched. I argue that dominant discourse on transgender identities centres on bodies that fit within the gender binary. Building on the work of trans artists such as Cassils, I will examine the socio-physical possibilities of non-binary expressions through creative approaches to exercise practice. Positioning these exercise practices as a primary research method, I aim to investigate methods for representing my own non-binary body through the documentation of performative creative outputs. These performances will be further informed by informal interviews, audience feedback, and continual reflection. Overall, this research project will provide new insights into the intersection of non-binary genders and physical performance.
