英文摘要
This will be the first book-length study to explore parental experiences and the concepts and emotions of parenthood in early modern Ottoman society. The project's fundamental research questions are:- How was parenthood constructed in cultural, emotional, and legal terms through the social identification ofparental practices, - and to what extent did the implementation of Islamic law in early modern Ottoman society shape parents' experiences regarding childcare, marriage, and divorce? To answer these questions, my research focuses on a socio-legal analysis of the gendered experiences of parents as detailed in eighteenth-century court records of Istanbul. This allows for the study of the relationship of family, emotions, and law in the making of Ottoman society, and the understandings and experiences of parenting in Istanbul in particular. Moreover, this project will be the first to address a pressing gap in both the history of emotions and the history of family which remain largely focused on European history. Despite historians' calls for the study of non-European history and their emphasis on the eighteenth century as a period of transition for concepts of family, a study of eighteenth-century Ottoman parenting remains missing (Jarzebowski and Safley, 2013).
