Mapping Memorial Books (MMB) will focus on the post-war cycle of Jewish commemorative writing created by survivors in the aftermath of the Holocaust. From the 1940s onwards, over 1,000 memorial books appeared, depicting lost communities in Europe. Many were in Yiddish, a language largely inaccessible to the public. By cross-referencing archival records of the Glaswegian Jewish community with the corpus of Yizkor books, this project will map Jewish immigration in Glasgow back to its ancestral towns. Employing this archive for the first time, the project will add depth and nuance to the study of pre-war Jewish life and Holocaust memory
